Frontier Hook II

B.C. Joshua makes each Frontier Hook by hand in his London studio. The aluminium is laser-cut from post-industrial sheet. The figure, a Black cowboy, is painted by Joshua himself, then sealed. Every piece carries the evidence of that process: slight variation in the painting, in the colour, in the way the figure stands. This is not a flaw in the work. It is the work.

The Frontier series emerged from Joshua's research into the history of Black cowboys on the American frontier, a history largely written out of popular culture. His grandfather was born in Harlem in 1890. The hooks hold that lineage lightly, without announcement.

FH II works as a standalone piece or alongside FH I and FH III as a modular wall composition.
